Network Changes: What Cape Cod Employers Need to Know
Networks aren't static — and a real, confirmed change to BCBS Massachusetts' small-group lineup is worth understanding before your next renewal.
The Change
BCBS Massachusetts is discontinuing PPO and EPO plans in the merged market
Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts has confirmed — directly to industry press — that it will discontinue all PPO and EPO plans in the merged market (the combined individual and small-group markets) after 2026. Reporting on the change indicates it takes effect at renewal beginning January 1, 2027, for groups with 1–50 full-time employees, who will need to transition to an HMO or another available plan type.
Why this matters more here than in a lot of markets: BCBS's broad-network PPO has long been a popular choice for Cape Cod small groups specifically because it travels well — for employees who split time off-Cape, commute seasonally, or have moved to the Cape from elsewhere and want to keep an existing provider relationship. A shift to HMO-style plans means tighter, more defined networks, which is a bigger practical change here than it might be for an employer whose entire workforce stays local year-round.

This is a confirmed, dated change — but your specific renewal terms, effective date, and available replacement plans should always be verified directly with your carrier or advisor.
What Isn't Changing
This is a plan-design change, not a carrier exit
BCBS Massachusetts is not leaving the Massachusetts market, and this doesn't affect every plan type or every group size the same way. Large-group and self-funded arrangements are generally structured differently and may not be affected on the same timeline. The point isn't to be alarmed — it's to know this is happening and check it against your own renewal rather than being surprised by it in a renewal packet.
Before Your Next Renewal
A quick checklist
Ask your carrier or advisor
- Is our current plan one of the PPO or EPO plans being discontinued?
- What replacement plan types are available to a group our size?
- Does the replacement network still include our employees' current primary care and specialty providers?
- Is there a change to the pharmacy network or behavioral health network tied to this transition?
Cape Cod-specific questions
- If employees see providers off-Cape (Boston, South Shore, or out of state), does the replacement network reach them?
- For seasonal or dual-residence employees, does the new network still work in their off-season location?
- If a provider is billed under a practice or facility name rather than an individual physician, have you checked the network under that name too?
